The Breath in the Words: Why I Teach the Art of Reality
Acting: the art of finding reality in fantasy.
When I began my journey as an actor, I was so focused on bringing the script to life that I failed to bring life into the words on the page. I treated the script like a rigid blueprint—a set of instructions to be followed with absolute precision. But as I’ve developed, I’ve realized that a script only has the power that you give it. Even the best-written scenes will fall flat without human ingenuity and the courage to be present.
I started teaching performing arts because I saw so many young artists struggling with that same wall. We are taught to be 'perfect' and 'stoic,' but the craft demands we be 'real' and 'available.'
True artistry isn't about escaping into a character. It’s about bringing your own lived reality into the fantasy of the story. Your struggles, your Day Ones, your triumphs…these raw life moments are what make life genuine.
As I continue my career as a creative, I am dedicated to helping performers to bridge that gap. We mustn’t just study the words; it is imperative that we study the breath, the resonance, and the heartbeat behind them. Whether you are a singer reaching for a new note or an actor prepping for an upcoming project, the goal is the same: to stop 'acting' and start living.
